In the final day of track and field action at the National Senior Games in Albuquerque, New Mexico Flo Meiler added two more gold medals to her total with wins in the W85 hammer throw at 59’4” and pole vault at 5’1”. Picking up fourth place finishes were Francesca Moravcsik in the W84 hammer throw at 47’5” and Jill Broderick in the W65 pole vault at 5’3”. Sandra Wall was 6th in the W60 200 meter dash in 35.17 seconds. She also helped a W60 4×100 meter relay team to a third place finish in 1:10.54. Dudley Bell finished 11th in the M85 hammer throw with a 18’8” toss and Peter Davis finished 18th in the M75 javelin with a 61’9” throw.
Susan Madrigan and Joan Weir kicked off their W60 doubles pool play in the with an 8-2 victory on the tennis courts. Arlene Silva and Kathy Yost had the only other Vermont win on the courts as they finished pool play with a 1-1 record after winning their Thursday match 8-1 in W65 doubles. Eugene and Valentina Demidenko bowed out in the quarterfinals of the 65-69 mixed doubles with a 8-3 loss. Linda Braken and Karen Andersen had a tough 8-5 loss in the W65 doubles to finish pool play at 0-2. Arlene Silva also competed in her first W65 singles match and went down 8-5. On the men’s singles side Ned McMahon was the only Vermonter in action Thursday and lost 8-2.
On the basketball courts Vermonters Stan Wilbur and Don Gilman helped the New Hampshire Olympians to their first victory in pool play as they won 32-29 over the South Dakota Pheasants.
