Flo Meiler and Margaret Nickerson continue to lead the medal charge for Vermont at the National Senior Games in Albuquerque, New Mexico. In track and field Meiler picked up gold medals in the W85 javelin with a toss of 37’ even and in the W85 100 meter dash with a time of 24.49 seconds. At the pool, Nickerson matched her medal count with a gold in the W85 100 yard freestyle with a time of 2:09.27 and a silver in the W85 50 yard backstroke in a time of 1:05.71.
At the Jerry Cline Tennis Center, the W70 doubles team of Allyson Bolduc and Sherry Daniels rallied from down 1-5 in the second set to defeat the team of Laura Baetz and Judy McGaugh of Missouri 6-4, 7-6 in the gold medal game of that event.
Other Vermont medal winners today were Dee Barbic who took bronze in the W50 20 Km cycling road race in a time of 35:21.7; and Lee Ann Banks who picked up another bronze in the pool, finishing third in the W55 100 yard freestyle and fourth in the 50 yard backstroke. Also winning a silver medal for New York today was Sue Tendy who swam the W70 50 meter backstroke in 44.16 seconds and was seen collecting her hardware on the medal stand in her Vermont Senior Games t-shirt. Sue also finished seventh in the W70 100 yard freestyle in 1:24.16.
Other Vermont finishers in the pool were Marilyn Williams, 18th in the 50 yard backstroke in 58.01; Sarah Beth Bombardier, 6th in the W50 200 yard Individual Medley in 3:22.40, 6th in the W50 100 yard freestyle in 1:14.83 and 5th in the W50 butterfly in 42.75; Mary Clifton, 8th in the W60 100 yard free in 1:15.85 and 7th in the 50 yard butterfly in 38.40; John Mahoney, 15th in the M65 50 yard fly in 37.77; and Harvey Ottinger Jr. who was 4th in the M60 200 yard breaststroke in 2:48.53.
Also competing for Vermont in the 20 km cycle race were Brian Conchieri, 16th in the M60 division in 31:26.5; Andre Sturm, 24th in the M55 division in 33:38.6; Lawrence Myer, 20th in the M70 division in 35:39.8; and John Bertelsen, 32nd in the M70 division in 39:30.5.
In track and field Lisa Lillibridge earned a 5th place ribbon in the W50 discus with a toss of 75’5”. Other competitors today were Jill Broderick who finished 9th in the W65 discus in 54’4; and Dudley Bell who was 12th in the M85 javelin throw with a toss of 34’1”. I found a couple of results from Sunday that I overlooked when writing that report: Jill Broderick was 11th in the W65 shot with a toss of 22’8.5”; and Charlie Miceli was 26th in the M60 400 meter dash prelims with a time of 1:19.92.
While at the tennis courts for Bolduc and Daniels gold medal game I ran into Valentina and Eugene Demidenko who are off to a fast start in the 65-69 mixed doubles with two wins today buy scores of 8-0 and 8-2.
On the basketball court the only Vermont representative, Vermont Foliage, came back from a 39-18 loss to USA-CAL to beat NJSLAS 22-6 in the first day of their M85 tournament.
