Allen Mead (M50) and Elizabeth McCarthy (w65) picked up bronze medals today in the National Senior Games 5 km road race held at Balloon Fiesta Park in Albuquerque, New Mexico. With smoke from Arizona wildfires triggering air quality alerts Mead finished the 5 kilometer course in 19:19. McCarthy’s time was 28:47. Other finishers from Vermont were Jim Flint in 21:33 for 7th in the M60 division, Matt Guild in 21:33 for 9th in the M55 division, Tim Hogeboom in 25:23 for 18th in the M65 division, and Ed Dinnany in 27:37 for 24th in the M70 division. On the tennis courts Susan Madrigan had a busy day, winning a W60 doubles match with Joan Weir 8-2, and splitting a pair of W60 singles matches: winning 8-0 in her first match and losing 9-7 in her second match of the day. Arlene Silva won her W65 singles match of the day by the same 9-7 score. In W60 men’s singles action Ned McMahon lost his match 8-3.
