VSGA athletes finished high in the overall ranks at the 34th Annual Colchester Triathlon held on Sunday July 29th at Bayside Park in Colchester. With over 40 athletes dual-registered for this fun and demanding event, VSGA finishers claimed 4 of the top 15 places overall. Donna Smyers (60) of Adamant, VT was also the first woman across the finish line. The Triathlon this year consisted of a 500-yard swim, 12-mile bike ride and 3-mile run. Although there is an option to kayak 1.5 miles instead of swimming or compete as part of a team, those wanting to try for VSGA medals and qualify for the 2019 National Senior Games were required to swim, bike and run as an individual.
It was a beautiful day for the race and there were lots of spectators cheering on their favorite competitors. VSGA Triathlon Sport Coordinator Betsy Terry and VSGA Board members Barb Jordan and Maggie Leugers were on hand to greet athletes and hand out medals to the many tired but smiling competitors. VSGA extends a huge thank you to Mike Lapan and all his colleagues at the Colchester Recreation Department who make this event possible. Thanks to everyone who turned out!
IMPORTANT NEWS FLASH: VSGA has learned that the National Senior Games Rules now allow anyone who is 50 years old by December 31, 2018, who successfully completes a state-sponsored triathlon to be qualified for the 2019 National Senior Games Triathlon which will be held in Albuquerque, NM.
