Vermont’s 2017 National Senior Games Athletes Celebrated at the State House

On Thursday April 19th, fifteen VSGA athletes, representing the Vermont delegation that traveled to Birmingham in June 2017 to compete in the National Senior Games, were celebrated by Governor Scott, Lt. Gov. Zuckerman, and the House of Representatives.

Beginning with an informal gathering hosted by the Lt. Governor’s office, the NSG athletes, along with members of the VSGA Board, volunteers, and family members, had the opportunity to trade stories and view a slide show of photos from the Birmingham games. Lt. Governor Zuckerman welcomed them all and spent 45 minutes learning more about how each of them came to their respective sports as well as highlights of their experiences participating in the National Senior Games. Several legislators were also able to join this gathering and meet their athletic constituents. Sen. Anthony Pollina mentioned that in the State House he participates daily in “olympic sitting.”

Then it was off to the Governor’s Ceremonial office where Governor’s Phil Scott welcomed them and presented certificates honoring their accomplishments. The Governor also spent some informal time with the athletes sharing stories and hearing more about VSGA.

After lunch and a tour of the State House, the entire VSGA delegation sat in the House Chamber and heard the reading a Joint Resolution honoring their accomplishments and VSGA’s contribution to helping older Vermonters stay fit and engaged. Rep. Jim Masland of Thetford, who was the lead sponsor of the Resolution, presented an official copy to the VSGA Delegation. By all accounts it was a very enjoyable day full of well-deserved recognition of some of Vermont’s most outstanding senior athletes.

2018 is the qualifying year for the 2019 National Senior Games scheduled to be held in Albuquerque, New Mexico and many athletes are already preparing to compete in this year’s Vermont Senior Games in hopes of making another trip to the National Games. The Swimming and Bowling championships have already been held and the next competition will be the 2018 Racquetball Championships which will be held on Sat. May 19th at The Edge in Essex.
