Eighty-seven VSGA athletes defied heat and humidity on Saturday June 30th to run, jump and throw at the 2018 Track & Field Meet held at South Burlington High School. In spite of temperatures approaching a steamy 90 degrees, there was no lessening of competitive spirit, supportive camaraderie and personal bests. Extra amenities that were added for keep everyone comfortable and healthy included a big tent to provide shade for athletes and spectators, a misting sprinkler near the track and LOTS of drink stations.
First-time, and youngest, competitor, Dee Barbic, of Hinesburg took home Gold medals in the Women’s 50-54 divisions of the 200M, 800M, 1500M races. Meanwhile veteran competitor Dudley Bell of East Burke earned Gold and Silver medals in the Men’s 85-89 division in three running and seven field events. Many competitors were focused on qualifying for the 2019 National Senior Games in Albuquerque, NM and many were simply enjoying a day of competing in the sports they love.
The Track & Field Championship is one of VSGA’s biggest and most complex events. It would not be possible without the expert organizing of VSGA Board member Barb Jordan and the amazing crew of volunteers she recruits to serve as judges, assistant judges, and all round helpers with check-in and meet management. Present and former VSGA Board members Marti Powers, Diana Wood, Maggie Leugers and Betsy Terry filled critical positions and contributed hours of planning work. Huge thanks are also due to Travis and his crew from TrackLife Timing, the staff of the South Burlington High and Middle Schools and the volunteers from the SBHS Boosters Club who ran the lunch concession stand. Many thanks to everyone who made the event a success!
