Swimming Event Starts VSGA 2018 Season with a Splash

The VSGA 2018 season got off to a great start with our annual partnership with The Edge Masters Swim Club for the “Swim Like A Fool” Masters Championship on Saturday April 7th hosted by The Edge in Williston. This is a really fun event because the competitors range in age from early 20’s all the way to our “Super Senior” Jean Archibald who is 90 this year. Everyone cheers everyone on and there is tremendous camaraderie and great competition.

Swimmers could register for their choice of up to 7 events from a possible 17. As always, The Edge’s Aquatic Director (and VSGA Sports Coordinator) Bethe Patrick-Ogle, Masters Swim Coach Emily Maxwell and their incredible team of volunteer timers and scorekeepers put on a well run, fun and fast moving event.

With 2018 being a qualifying year for the 2019 National Senior Games in Albuquerque there was an increase in the number of competitor and a lot of excitement about the possibility of going to Albuquerque. Some of the highlights were Harvey Ottinger, who was competing in swimming for the first time in 40 years and went home with four gold medals in the very competitive 60-64 age group. And Marilyn Williams, who was competing with VSGA for the first time and went home with three gold medals having said when she arrived at the pool on Saturday: “I’ve just come to swim!”
