A record nineteen teams, hailing from eight different states, totaling 95 players, ranging in age from 50 to 87 took to the courts at the Glenbrook Gym at Castleton University on Friday September 28th. For almost 6 hours there was nothing but fast and furious basketball. With the invaluable help of students and staff from Castleton U, and the Rutland Recreation Department, as well as super leadership from Sports Coordinator, captain/player (AND VSGA Board member) Bob Willey it was possible to put on a tournament that was not only huge but also hugely popular with all the participants.
Although many players had traveled long distances, leaving their homes in the wee dark hours that morning – one all the way from Martha’s Vineyard! – there was no lack of energy, competitive spirit and camaraderie from these dedicated basketball enthusiasts.
The “3 on 3” half-court format might seem easy but it is actually more like stuffing all the intensity, strategy, and teamwork of full-court basketball into a small bottle and shaking it. Although there was a fair amount of trash talking, and one referee, taking a short break, told onlookers to bring their cheese because there was plenty of “whine” on the courts, there was also plenty of laughter, cheering and mutual support. And everyone was still walking when it was all over. Congratulations to all these amazing players and everyone who supported them! Results
