While millions were preoccupied by the Royal Wedding, on Saturday morning May 19th the VSGA 2018 Racquetball Championship was held at The Edge in Essex, VT. 14 men and one very competitive woman (Liz Audet) went toe to toe for 6 hours of intense Singles and Doubles competition in 5 age groups. Our “youngest” competitor was Robert Thomas from Barre at 62 and our “oldest” was veteran VSGA athlete Harvey Ottinger at a vigorous 89.
The competition was often fierce but also friendly with lots of mutual support and encouragement. One of the requirements of the National Senior Games rules is that in doubles play, the competitive age group is that of the younger player. And several of our veteran players had “advanced” into a new age group with the passage of a year. With 2018 being the qualifying year for the 2019 National Senior Games, there was high-spirited discussion of a VSGA road trip to Albuquerque, NM where the national games will be held.
Many thanks to our volunteer Sport Coordinators Les Hankins, Jr. and Liz Audet and our intrepid scorekeeper Lonnie Wimble who is looking forward to joining the esteemed ranks of VSGA athletes soon!.
Congratulations to all the players! Results Here
